This study was a corpus- comparative descriptive study which was aimed to explore a group of Persian special fixed collocations
called ‘Doublets’. In order to determine their translation strategies, the
researcher drew upon Baker’s (1992) model plus Domestication and Foreignization
procedure. A sample of 626 Persian doublets with their
English equivalents were detected and extracted from the whole four volumes of Aryanpour
Persian-English Dictionary. After data collection, they were categorized into five main groups as: (a)‘Identical Doublets’, (b) ‘Near
Synonymous Doublets’, (c) ‘Doublets of a Semantic Field’, (d) ‘Antonymous
Doublets’, and (e) ‘Doublets of Untypical Collocations’. The results
showed that the abundant strategy is ‘using a target language doublet of
similar meaning but dissimilar form’. It ranked the most frequent strategy of 214
doublets out of total 626 cases with 34.18% of frequency of occurrence. The researcher
detected some other types of strategies beside Baker’s framework, which were:
‘Packing Strategy’, ‘Reordering Strategy’, ‘Cultural Substitution strategy’. In the case of domestication and foreignization procedure, the
obtained results revealed the inclination of the English translation of Persian
doublets towards procedure of foreignization, with the distribution frequency of 448 out of 626 and
with ratio number of 71.56%.
